At first this review reads a bit harsh, but after making it to the end I realize that Mr. Thompson is really a fan in disguise, wishing that Chris Martin and gang would write something a bit more intelligent, challenging, and provoking so that he would be more justified in liking their music so much. I’m more okay with my Coldplay love, but find his writing really funny and, par for the course at the Atlantic, rather smart.

Is this song any good? It’s a Coldplay song—a carefully orchestrated, melodically solid, hands-to-the-sky, all-around rousing rock anthem about, literally, crying. Does that make any sense? Of course not. Is that description abhorrent to you? Me, too. Which is why I’m carefully monitoring the volume on my earphones to make sure nobody hears me hitting the repeat button again, and again, and again.
